J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship

In order to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries, annual appropriations are made by Congress as well as foreign governments, universities, corporations and private donors. Applicants must be U. S. citizens at the time of application and hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent at the beginning of the date of the grant and should be proficient in the language of the host country.

Most grants provide round-trip international transportation, tuition, health and accident insurance and maintenance for one academic year.

Truman Scholarship Competition

Applicants must be full-time junior-level student at a four-year institution, committed to a career in public service, in the upper quarter of the class, and a U. S. citizen of U.S. national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (Resident aliens are not eligible).

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation awards seventy-five to eighty $30,000 merit-based scholarships to college students who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government or elsewhere in public service. Recipients will receive leadership training, graduate school counseling, preferential admission and merit-based aid to some premier graduate institutions, and internship opportunities with federal agencies.

British Marshall Scholarship

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom in a system of higher education recognized for its excellence.

Applicants are expected to be U.S. citizens who hold a first degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States with a minimum GPA of 3.7.

Up to 40 awards are granted annually, and include university fees for any applicable British university, cost of living expenses, annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, fares to and from the United States and, where applicable, a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse.

The Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest 2002

All registered undergraduate full-time juniors or seniors at accredited four-year colleges or universities in the United States are invited to compete for the annual Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics. This year's suggested essay topics are :

  • Why are we here? How are we to meet our ethical obligations?
  • Reflect on the most profound, moral dilemma you have encountered and what it has taught you about ethics
  • What ethical issue concerns you most and what concrete proposals would you make to deal with it?

In 3000 or 4000 words, students are encouraged to raise questions, single out issues and identify dilemmas. The essay may be developed from any point of view and may take the form of an analysis that is biographical, literary, philosophical, psychological, sociological or theological. Awards range from $500 to $5000.

United States Rhodes Scholarship

American Rhodes scholars are selected through a decentralized process by which regional selection committees choose 32 scholars each year from among those nominated by selection committees in each of the fifty states. Applications are sought from talented students without restrictions as to their field of academic specialization or career plans although the proposed course of study must be available at Oxford, and the applicant's undergraduate program must provide a sufficient basis for further study in the proposed field.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, aged eighteen or over not yet twenty-four on October 1 in the year of application. They must also have academic standing sufficient to assure completion of a bachelor's degree before going into residence in Oxford the following October in the event of election to a Scholarship.

Scholarships reward educational costs, such as matriculation, tuition, laboratory and certain other fees. Each scholar receive in addition a maintenance allowance adequate to meet necessary expenses for term-time and vacations.

Ronald Reagan Future Leaders Program

The Future Leaders Program is open to students who have sophomore, and in some cases, junior standing, who demonstrate leadership on behalf of the cause of freedom, American values and constitutional principles. The program recognizes outstanding young leaders on campus and in the community who are making significant, positive differences to promote American values on their college campus. To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen, enrolled full-time and in good standing at any accredited, four-year degree-granting institution in the United States or its territories. An essay describing your background, educational and career objectives, leadership and achievements, among other criteria, will be required. Finally, you will be asked to submit at least two letters of recommendation.

Samuel Huntington Public Service Award

The Samuel Huntington Award is given to graduating seniors who wish to pursue public service anywhere in the world. The award allows recipients to engage in a meaningful activity that furthers the public good, before proceeding on to graduate school or a career. Students shape their own proposals for public service in this country or abroad. These proposals can be undertaken by a student alone or working through an established charitable, religious, educational, governmental or other public service organization.

The award is a $10,000 stipend for a period of public service which may range from 6 months to a year.

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship For New Americans

The Soros Fellowship exists to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields and to partake of the American dream. Fellows must have shown potential in the fields for which they seek further education; the capacity for creativity, persistence and work; and the commitment to the values of the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights, which protect the American dream. Naturalized U.S. citizens, children of two parents who are both naturalized U.S. citizens, or resident aliens are encouraged to submit applications.

Full support is given for two years of graduate study in the United States. Fellows receive a $20,000 maintenance grant and a tuition grant of one-half the tuition cost of graduate program.

The Connecticut General Assembly Legislative Internship Program

All undergraduate students attending two or four year institutions of higher education in Connecticut are invited to apply to the Legislative Internship Program, which strives to prepare students to perform the necessary support services desired by the legislators for whom they are working.

Both full-time and part-time internships are available and are scheduled to start the third week of January and ends in May. A stipend based on the number of miles traveled to the Capitol is paid to interns to help cover travel expenses.

Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs

The Fellows Program is a prestigious, nine-month experience-based training program for recent college graduates interested in government and public affairs. The emphasis is on developing an understanding of the processes by which individuals and institutions create and administer public policy. Leadership is a key qualification as well as involvement in civic or campus activities. Tuition is charged ($3,500), but stipends, based on need, of up to $10,000 are available.
