Internship

The University of Bridgeport's Internship Program is unique and innovative. Started in 1982, it was the first program of its kind in the country. The Internship Program is designed and developed to provide:

  • College graduates with an opportunity to be immersed into the whole school culture, to become certified as a teacher or school administrator, and/or to earn a graduate degree.
  • School districts with short term substitute teachers, small group tutors, teacher aides, and administrative support personnel who are in a planned and supervised educational program.
  • The University of Bridgeport with an effective means to train highly qualified, motivated graduate students while working collaboratively with school districts.

The Internship Program is an integral part of teacher education at the University of Bridgeport. Interns work at a school and in a school district of their choice or in a school selected by the Director of the Intern Program. Interns spend an entire year following the schedule of the selected school district. Tuition for University of Bridgeport course work is fully paid resulting in a tuition free degree/certification experience. In the evening interns take coursework leading to a degree or certification in one of the following areas:

  • Teacher certification and Master's degree
  • Teacher certification only
  • Master's degree only
  • Sixth Year Certificate in Teaching
  • Sixth Year Certificate in School Administration
  • Certification in Remedial Reading and Language Arts
  • Certification as Reading Consultant

During the internship, coursework and school experience are linked to integrate theory with practice. Students are expected to reflect on the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary for success as an educator.
