International Faculty Biographies

Dr. Dave Benjamin holds a Ph.D. and M.Phil. from the University of Cambridge, UK.  He was previously on the faculty of St. George’s University where he was instrumental in setting up the Liberal Studies programme at the School of Arts and Sciences. He has held a Visiting Professorship at the Political Science Department of University of Connecticut.
   Dr. Benjamin is the author of a number of articles on governance and international politics, including the crisis in Kosovo in 1999, the resurgence of the extreme Right in Europe, implications of mass terrorism for the Caribbean Community, and the Reagan-Thatcher “Special Relationship”.  His research interests include governance and vulnerability in small island developing states, the North-South divide, and policy toward the Eastern Caribbean.

 

    

Dr. Stephen Healey, who holds degrees in Religion and Society from Eastern Nazarene College, Andover Newton Theological School , and Boston College, taught at Boston College, Andover Newton Theological School, and Merrimack College, before assuming his current role as Director of the World Religions Program at the University. His research and publications have focused on Religion and Human Rights, the Phenomenology of Conversion, Globalization in Religion, and Public Theology. He is currently writing a book with colleagues on Theories of Human Nature. His major teaching and research methods are the comparative analysis of religions and enquiry into the public dimensions of religious belief and practice. He is a member of seven professional societies, including the American Academy of Religion, the Association for the Sociology of Religion, and the Association for Applied and Professional Ethics. His teaching motto comes from Max Muller: "He [or she] who knows one religion, knows none."

     

Dr. Richard L. Rubenstein is President Emeritus of the University of Bridgeport. A Distinguished Professor of Religion at the University and a Life Member of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Rubenstein also serves as Director of the University's Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. An internationally recognized historian of religion whose writings lie at the root of Holocaust writings, his works have been the subject of more than a dozen doctoral dissertations.   One of his books entitled "The Cunning of History" is currently being translated into French. Professor Rubenstein's writings have also been cited as a key inspiration for the Academy Award winning film Sophie's Choice. Prior to assuming his role as President of the University of Bridgeport, Dr. Rubenstein served as Distinguished Professor of Religion at Florida State University. Recently Florida State University created the Richard L. Rubenstein Chair for Religious Studies in his honor.

Susan A. Katz is an accomplished award-winning Writer/Producer/Director and Creative Director. She works in film, video, radio, print and web /new media production servicing corporate, commercial and political clients. She founded dotmedia inc., a full-service production company in 1985. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Prof. Katz holds a B.A. with Honors from Brooklyn College, Department of Television & Radio; a Certificate in Filmmaking from New York University and a Masters with Distinction from Quinnipiac University.  Prof Katz served on the Executive Council of the Connecticut Association of Production Professionals for two terms and was Board Member of the International Television Association (CT Chapter) for three terms. She is listed in multiple editions of Marquis’ Who’s Who and other biographical publications.

Dr. Justus van der Kroef , Professor Emeritus, served for many years as the bulwark of the University's political science department. Dr. van der Kroef continues to teach each semester in the areas of International Relations and American Foreign Policy. A world recognized authority on Southeast Asia, Dr. van der Kroef is frequently sought out for his expertise on foreign affairs by public and private institutions alike. Dr. van der Kroef earned his doctorate at Columiba University and continues to serve as the Managing Editor of the Columbia University Journal of Modern Asian Thought.

 

   

Dr. Yanmin Yu received her Ph.D. at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. She is a Fulbright Scholar and Rolan D. Melton Fellow of the American Press Institute. She served as the President of the Association of Chinese Professors of Social Sciences in the from 2001 to 2003. She teaches a number of courses in the area of mass communication. She has contributed articles and book chapters to various publications. Her recent book, American Media and American Society has been well received. Her research interests include media and society, media and foreign policy, media and international relations, intercultural communication, and US - relations.

                                

Dr. Mark Setton earned his doctorate in Oriental Studies at Oxford. An internationally recognized East Asian scholar, Dr. Setton has been a Visiting Professor at Harvard and at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Setton is widely published. His book Chong Yagong: Korea's Challenge to Orthodox Neo-Confucianism (SUNY Press 1997) pioneers a new area of academic inquiry in the West. Dr. Setton teaches Confucianism, Taoism, Philosophy of Religion, and East Asian political philosophy in the International College .

 

Professor Yongbom Kim is an internationally recognized Martial Artist. He earned his undergraduate and his Masters degree in Martial Arts from 's Kyung Hee University . He also holds a seventh degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Professor Kim has a particular academic interest in the historical and philosophical roots of Martial Arts and is becoming recognized for his commitment to mainstream the Martial Arts as an academic discipline in the West. He teaches both practical and theoretical courses in Martial Arts at the University of Bridgeport 's International College .

 

Professor Joe-Joe Suozzi has been studying Shotokan Karate for over 30 years and holds a 6th Degree Blackbelt with the All-Japan Karate Federation and a 4th Degree Blackbelt in Tairu-ryu Kobudo. For the past 15 years, Sensei Joe-Joe has owned a successful dojo in Stamford Connecticut and is the President of the North American Karate Association. .

 

Dr. Zhiqun Zhu received a Ph.D. in political science from the University of South Carolina. He has taught at Hamilton College in New York, University of South Carolina, and Shanghai International Studies University. In the early 1990s, he worked as the chief information assistant to the Consul for Press and Cultural Affairs at the American Consulate General in Shanghai. Professor Zhu is the author of US-China Relations in the 21st Century: Power Transition and Peace (Routledge, 2006). He has published several book chapters on Asian political economy and US-China relations. His research articles have appeared on Asian Perspective, Global Economic Review, Journal of International and Area Studies, Journal of Asia-Pacific Affairs, Journal of Chinese Political Science, etc. Dr. Zhu was named a POSCO Fellow by the East-West Center in Hawaii in 2006. He is frequently sought by the news media to comment on US-East Asian relations and Chinese politics.

 

Dr. Noel Brown is President of Friends of the United Nations. Previously, he served as the Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), North American regional office. Dr. Brown holds a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from Seattle University , an M.A. in International Law and Organization from Georgetown University , and a Ph.D. in International Law and Relations from Yale University .


Dr. Ryan A. Knox earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut School of Law, and earned his B.A. from Wesleyan University, majoring in government and psychology. He also completed an intensive study on the American Presidency at Yale University. Dr. Knox was a founding member of the University of Connecticut School of Law’s Academic Careers Society, and worked for the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut. Dr. Knox is most proud of his in depth study and research of the recently adopted South African Constitution. He was the winner in the South African Moot Court competition adjudicated by Chief Justice Ralph Zulman of the South African Supreme Court of Appeals (South Africa’s highest court). Prior to law school he worked in conjunction with social service agencies and law-enforcement to help youthful offenders to rehabilitate their lives. He has also served as an advisor and speech writer to several national political campaigns.  

 


Mr. Clement B. Malin has had a distinguished career that has included key leadership roles in the field of energy development. He completed his career as Texacos Vice President for International Relations but he also played a leadership role in the U.S. Department of Energy. Mr. Malin earned his B.A. at Dartmouth College and he completed a Masters degree in International Relations at Princeton University. He resides with his wife in Wilton, Connecticut where he pioneered an international affairs club that meets once a month in order to discuss and explore topics germane to world affairs. This past Spring Professor Malin taught an upper level course at the University of Bridgeport on the Geopolitics of Oil.

 


Dr. Beth P. Scott received her Ph.D. at the University of Connecticut.  Her doctoral dissertation, “Rooting For Laundry:  An Examination of the Creation and Maintenance of A Sport Fan Identity” examined the ways in which individuals develop and maintain identities as fans of sports teams.  After receiving her degree she served as faculty in the Pediatrics Department at the University of Connecticut Medical School, where she managed a grant examining Connecticut’s Behavioral Health System.  She also served as the director of research at the Gesell Institute for Human Development.  In addition, she has taught a wide range of Sociology courses at the University of Connecticut, Eastern Connecticut State University and Central Connecticut State University.

 

 

 


Dr.Thomas J. Wardis Dean of the International College and Vice President for International Programs at the University of Bridgeport. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Ward did his doctoral studies at the Catholic Institute of Paris and at De La Salle University in the Philippines where he wrote his doctoral thesis under Andrew Gonzalez who later served as the Minister of Education of the Philippines. Dr. Ward has traveled in more than 60 countries and has lived in Latin America, East Asia, and Europe. He lectures in English, Spanish and French and has a working knowledge of several other languages. One of the University’s pioneer instructors in distance learning, Dr. Ward has received five grants from the Connecticut Department of Education’s Distance Learning Consortium for online programs that he has developed. Dr. Ward lectures and writes on issues relating to comparative education, religion and society, and regional political economy. Most recently he edited Development, Social Justice and Civil Society—An Introduction to the Political Economy of NGOs (Paragon House 2005). Prior to moving to Connecticut with his family in 2000 he also served as a Human Rights Commissioner in Dutchess County, New York.
