English

The English concentration in the Literature and Civilization major provides a great background for any number of career paths.  The focus is on critical thinking and analysis, while teaching students to express that thinking in a logical and persuasive manner.  Students who may wish to continue their education in graduate school will find that a degree in English at UB will prepare them not just for a Master's and Doctoral program in English Literature, but law school, business school, or others.

The English concentration also serves the needs of students who are interested in teaching English in high school.  There is a special track of the Literature and Civilization program which permits students to take the 30 credits of English courses and 9 credits of History courses required by the state of Connecticut for those who want to teach English in high school.

Courses in this concentration include such highlights as Shakespeare, British Literature I and II, American Literature I and II, World Literature, Modern African-American Literature, Women in Literature, Studies in the Novel, Science Fiction, and three Introductory courses in Drama, Fiction, and Poetry.  There is also a flexible Topics in Literature course that in the past has featured such exciting topics as Travel and Adventure, Murder in Literature, Modern African-American Women Writers, and Film and Literature.
