Copyright and Fair Use

Copyright and fair use are ideas that are increasingly important to educators, researchers, and students alike. The Magnus Wahlstrom Library is here to help figure out what your copy rights are.

As an educator, much of what you may want to use for your various classes is covered under fair use laws. However, there are a number of situations where extra steps will have to be taken to ensure compliance with copyright laws.  While you can freely reproduce parts of works for your class needs, any distribution of items in their entirety will require special attention:

  • For copyrighted works that the library has access to, a link to the resource should be provided instead of providing extra copies.
  • For items that the library does not have access to, permission from the copyright holder to reproduce the works must be obtained.
  • For any open-access/creative commons/public domain works, they can be distributed in accordance with the rights that the authors have reserved.
  • In every case, proper credit must be given to the authors and/or copyright holders.

More information concerning your copyrights can be found on the Know Your Copyrights website, and are also explained in this copyrights brochure.
