Academic Concerns
I am a transfer student; will I receive credit for coursework previously taken at the university level?
Can I register for my courses before I arrive at UB for new student orientation in August?
Can I change my academic major once I arrive at UB?

I am a transfer student; will I receive credit for coursework previously taken at the university level?
Transfer credit may be granted for previously completed academic coursework. Transfer applicants must submit official transcripts from the previous college or university for evaluation. Provisional transfer credit analysis is conducted at the time of application by admissions staff. Credit transfer is not guaranteed until it is approved by the major department.

Can I change my academic major once I arrive at UB?
You must first complete one semester in the major into which you were accepted. The academic advisor in your proposed major will review your grades and determine your eligibility. Changing majors may require spending additional time at the University. Some academic requirements vary by program. Our best advice: speak with an academic advisor.

Academic Resource Center (ARC)
What are the ARC hours?
What if I cannot make it to the ARC during your hours?
Do I have to make an appointment to see a tutor?
Can I drop my paper off to be corrected?
Is there a fee to use the ARC or online tutoring?
How will a tutor help me?

What are the ARC hours?
Check our schedule each semester on the UB website, www.bridgeport.edu/arc.

What if I cannot make it to the ARC during your hours?
University of Bridgeport subscribes to online tutoring for its undergraduate students.  It can be accesses at www.etutoring.org.  Undergraduate students are automatically registered by the first day the service is available.  If you have a problem signing on, contact the Academic Resource Center at (203) 576-4290 or arc@bridgeport.edu.

Do I have to make an appointment to see a tutor?
While an appointment is advisable, especially during certain peak times of the semester, walk-ins are accepted if a tutor is available.

Can I drop my paper off to be corrected?
No.  You and the tutor work together to improve your paper as well as your overall writing skills.

Is there a fee to use the ARC or online tutoring?
No.  Both services are free.

How will a tutor help me?
While our tutors can help you with specific questions, clarify concepts, and serve as sounding boards during brainstorming sessions, remember, the primary responsibility for the work lies with the student.  Tutors do not take the place of attending class, reading the assignment, and doing the research.

Bookstore
Who manages the UB Bookstore?
How do I get my books for my classes?
How much should I expect to spend on books each semester?
Can I sell my books back at the end of the semester?
Can I purchase my books from other online websites?

Who manages the UB Bookstore?
Follett Higher Education Group, the largest bookstore management company with over 800 bookstores in the US and Canada, manages the University of Bridgeport bookstore.  The UB Bookstore carries all the required textbooks and supplies for classes offered at UB, as well as clothing, gifts, sundries, and commencement regalia.

How do I get my books for my classes?
It’s easy!  Just bring your course schedule to the bookstore where you can pick out new or used books that correspond with your courses.  Students can also purchase their books online at www.efollett.com, which is the largest textbook selling website in the world.  Books purchased online can either be shipped to the student’s home or prepaid and pick up at the bookstore.

How much should I expect to spend on books each semester?
Books typically cost between $75-150 per class. Books are available used as much as possible.  Used books  are 25% less than the new price.

Can I sell my books back at the end of the semester?
The bookstore buys books back every day, all year round, but selling your books at the end of the semester will improve your chances of a higher return.   This is when we are buying books for the following semester and the need is greater.  If a professor is reusing a book the following semester, we will pay 50% of the selling price back to the student for it.

Can I purchase my books from other online websites?
We recommend using the UB Bookstore for the following reasons;
• The UB Bookstore works with the faculty to make sure we have the right materials for your courses.
• Returns and exchanges are immediate, no shipping necessary.
• Students can use their financial aid to purchase books.

Campus Activities and Community Services
What types of clubs and organizations does UB offer?
What if I’m interested in a club that isn’t currently offered?  Can I start my own?
Who decides what events are brought to this campus? How can I express my opinion about what I think would be good entertainment?
I’m interested in getting off campus once in a while and exploring new cities and sightseeing opportunities, does UB offer any options for this?
I’m very interested in volunteering, what opportunities are available for me?
I want to do well in my classes and my parents want me to focus on studies yet it would be nice to get involved in something and meet people. Won’t my grades suffer if I join a club?

What types of clubs and organizations does UB offer?
UB has over 40 registered clubs and organizations from which to choose!  Whether you want to write for the student newspaper, learn how to ballroom dance, perform at one of our many cultural nights, sing in a choir or relax with yoga, we have something for everyone.  For a list of our current registered clubs and organizations, click here.

What if I’m interested in a club that isn’t currently offered?  Can I start my own?
Yes!  We encourage students to form new clubs and organizations if we don’t already have them on campus.  It’s very easy to do and registered clubs are eligible to use campus facilities for free as well as request funds from our Student Government Association.  Please contact the Office of Campus Activities at campusactivities@bridgeport.edu for more information about starting a new club at UB.

Who decides what events are brought to this campus? How can I express my opinion about what I think would be good entertainment?
UBET (University of Bridgeport Events Team) is the primary campus activities planning group on campus and it’s run by and for students. UBET meets every Thursday from 12:15-1:00pm in room 112 of the Student Center.  Students are always welcome to attend meetings and offer suggestions, or better yet, get involved and participate in one of their many planning committees. For more information, please email campusactivities@bridgeport.edu

I’m interested in getting off campus once in a while and exploring new cities and sightseeing opportunities, does UB offer any options for this?
Yes!  We offer numerous opportunities for students to get off campus and explore all that our local area has to offer.  From trips to Boston, New York and New Haven, day and weekend ski trips to Connecticut and Vermont, outlet shopping excursions, our popular $5 movie nights and trips to see Broadway shows, to opportunities to go play paintball, catch a New York Knicks game or go bowling, we offer something almost every weekend for UB students to do off campus. And the best part is that we make sure the prices for these events are very reasonable for students!

I’m very interested in volunteering, what opportunities are available for me?
We provide many opportunities for UB students to volunteer in the greater Bridgeport area.  Our students volunteer at local soup kitchens, homeless shelters, nursing homes, food banks, schools and at a variety of other non-profit agencies.  Many of our students also serve as mentors to Bridgeport children throughout the year.  We also host American Red Cross blood drives and National Bone Marrow Registration drives several times a year on campus.  UB students are also very involved in our semester-long Martin Luther King Jr. “Season of Service” initiative where they volunteer their time at a variety of local non-profit programs.  Lastly, students can apply each spring to serve as Norge W. Jerome Service Scholars and participate in a weeklong alternative spring break trip.  Our service scholars have cleaned and rebuilt homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, tutored Native American children in Arizona and built homes with Habitat for Humanity in Texas.  For more information on getting involved and making a difference with community service, please email campusactivities@bridgeport.edu

I want to do well in my classes and my parents want me to focus on studies yet it would be nice to get involved in something and meet people. Won’t my grades suffer if I join a club?
While your primary focus needs to be on your studies, we definitely encourage you to find ways to get involved!  Studies show that students who get involved in something outside the classroom actually do better academically because they’re more connected to the university, have the support of friends and peers, and develop relationships with encouraging staff and faculty. By getting involved, chances are you’ll have better grades, make great friends, learn new skills, develop leadership qualities and have fun!  Lastly, future employers are often impressed with students who have actively engaged in extracurricular activities and community service.

I’m not sure what I want to major in, is there someone who can help me figure that out?
Ubjobnet asks for a resume and I have never written a resume, who can help me?

I have Work Study in my Financial Aid package, how do I get that money?
The money you see on your financial aid award letter for Work Study is not guaranteed. Work Study money is used to pay your salary at your on campus job. If you do not get a job on campus then you will not get your Work Study money. It is also not guaranteed that you will earn all of the money in your award. On campus jobs are paid hourly, not in one lump sum.

What types of jobs are there on campus and how to I find one?
There are three types of jobs on campus, Work Study, Student Employment and Graduate Assistantships.

The first step to finding a job on campus is to get pre-authorized with Financial Aid/Career Services. The authorization form is available at either Financial Aid or Career Services, both in the Garden Level of the Library. You must have this authorization sheet for your supervisor to hire you with.

Once you are pre-authorized you will find that Work Study jobs are most often listed on UBjobnet. UBjobnet is accessible from the Career Services website at http://www.bridgeport.edu/career  Check there first for on campus work study jobs. You must apply for jobs with your resume. Work Study students also have the opportunity to sign up with the Community Service Office to receive payment for volunteer work they do through that office.
*Note, Work Study is not automatically awarded to Graduate Students in their financial aid package. If you are a Graduate student as well as a US Citizen or Permanent Resident, ask your Financial Aid Counselor if you are eligible to have Work Study added to your award. This will make it easier for you to find a job on campus.

Student Employment and Graduate Assistantships are the other types of jobs available to students. These jobs are very competitive and there are not enough jobs for every student. Each semester there are as many as 2,000 students looking for Student Employment and Graduate Assistantship positions, and there are only a few hundred positions on campus. Sometimes these positions are posted on UBjobnet under on campus student employment, many times however these positions are not posted. The best way to find these positions is to meet people in your classes and departments and inquire about openings. Most academic departments have their own procedures for applying for a Graduate Assistantships, so make sure you contact your department to see if there are any openings.

What is the difference between Work Study and Student Employment positions on-campus?
Work Study jobs are available to students who have Work Study as part of their Financial Aid package (for domestic students only). This means that the money that pays the salary for their on campus job comes from the US Federal Government. Student Employment jobs are available to all students who meet the requirements. The money that pays the salary for these jobs comes from the University of Bridgeport budget.

What documents do I need to bring to work on campus?
To work on campus you must complete an I-9 Form.  In order to complete the I-9, ORIGINAL identifying documents need to be presented. The list on the reverse of the paper identifies all acceptable documentation. We need to see either ONE ORIGINAL document from List A or TWO ORIGINAL documents, one from List B and one from List C. Some of the more popular documents are.
For US Citizens, Permanent Residents and those with Employment Authorization
List A – US passport, US Permanent Resident Card, Employment Authorization Card
List B – Driver’s License, State issued ID card, UB student ID card
List C – Social Security Card, Birth Certificate
For International Students on an student visa
List A does not apply
List B – A picture ID issued by an institution in the US such as your student ID card, or a Connecticut State ID card or Driver’s License
List C – Both your I-94 card and your I-20 are needed for this list.

Can I work off-campus?
There are many opportunities for students to work off-campus.  These opportunities include retail, office, and in-home employment.  Part-time jobs are listed on UBJobnet and in binders in the Career Services Center.  In some cases students can use their Federal Work Study funds to work at community service organizations throughout the area.  Check with the Career Services Center for more information.
International students are not allowed to work off-campus without permission.  In most cases students must be in the country for some time before they are given permission.  Working off campus without this permission could result in a loss of student status.

Is it a good idea to work during my first semester of college?
Many students struggle to maintain a balance between social and school activities during the first semester of college.  Adding employment can often make time management more difficult.  It is always good for first semester students to work on-campus if they have to work.  On-campus jobs require a limited number of hours per week and have work schedules that are meant for students.  In addition there is no travel time involved.

How do I get a Social Security Number?
Social Security numbers are generally assigned to people who are authorized to work in the United States. If you are an F-1 student and eligible to work on campus, the Career Services Center will provide you with a letter allowing you to apply for a Social Security number once you have secured a campus position.  Please read the section on securing a student employment position for more information on finding on-campus employment.
If you are an F-1 student authorized to work in curricular practical training (CPT), we will provide you with your Form I-20 with the employment page (page 3) completed and signed by a school’s designated official to apply for the Social Security number

I’m not sure what I want to major in, is there someone who can help me figure that out?
The Career Services Center has a staff of career counselors that can help you with your career decision making.  You can make an appointment to discuss your major plans at any point after paying your deposit (even before orientation).  Your counselor may suggest some career tests or other resources to help you identify your interests and strengths.  Call the center at 203.576.4466 to schedule an appointment.

Ubjobnet asks for a resume and I have never written a resume, who can help me?
The Career Services Center includes a general overview of resume writing on our website at http://www.bridgeport.edu/pages/4384.asp.  We also encourage students to schedule an appointment to meet with one of our career counselors to go over their resumes.  It is good to have many people including professors, family and friends also look at your resume as each person will have a different opinion and will provide helpful feedback on refining the document.  You will continue to update your resume throughout college and career.  During the academic year, appointments can be scheduled Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM and Wednesday 8:30 AM – 7:00 PM.

What happens if I run out of Dining Dollars?
Can I pay for my friend to have dinner with me?
What happens if I forget my ID?
Is there a meal plan for commuters?
Where is the Sodexho office located?

Where do I get my Meal Card?
You don’t actually receive a meal card. Your UB ID becomes your meal card if you are a resident student in one of the four Residence Halls on Campus. In the lower portion of back of the ID card there is a bar code and a six digit number, these are for Dining Services purposes.

What’s the difference between Dining Dollars and Meal Points?
Dining Dollars are part of the meal plan and come with the meal plan. Any unused portion is forfeited at the end of each semester. Meal Points have to be purchased separately from the meal plan, cash or a credit card maybe used to purchase Meal Points, you may do so in the Sodexho Office.

Can my friend use my ID?
Your ID is non-transferable; you are the only person that can use your ID. Cards that are misused maybe confiscated and are subject to fines and or penalties.

How many meals per week can I eat?
Depending on which plan you choose, 19, 17, 12 or 8 meals per week at Marina. The weekly meal count is re-set at 7:00am Tuesday morning and ends after Dinner on Monday nights. Sorry, unused meals for the week are forfeited.

How can I change my meal plan?
If you are a resident student you will be assigned whichever plan you checked off when you signed the Residence Life Agreement. If you did not check off a specific plan you will be automatically placed in the 19 meals per week plan. All students will have an opportunity to change their meal plan selection during the first two weeks of classes. The last day to change your meal plan will be posted throughout Marina Dining Hall and Knight’s End Café’ well in advance.

What happens if I run out of Dining Dollars?
You have the option of purchasing Meal Points, these are not associated with the meal plan and have to be paid separately. Meal Points however do rollover from semester to semester.

Can I pay for my friend to have dinner with me?
Dining Dollars were designed to also give students the flexibility to purchase meals for friends and or family members at Marina Dining Hall or at Knight’s End Café.

English Language Institute/ELAB
My acceptance letter says that I have been conditionally accepted.  Can I take classes in my program?
My I-20 says that English is required for my program of study and English instruction will be given at the school.  Can I take classes in my program?
What do I do after I pass the ELAB?

What happens if I don’t pass the ELAB?
I didn’t pass the ELAB.  Can I take classes in my program this semester and do ELI next semester or in the summer?
Is it ever possible to take ELI and get started on my UB classes?
I got permission to take one or two UB classes plus ELI, but I know that I need to be a full time student in order to keep my F1 student status.  I’m afraid I’ll be out of status!
I know I want to go to ELI before taking any UB classes to improve my English, when should I arrive?
I know I want to go to ELI before taking any UB classes, but I reserved a flight for an earlier date and I want to live in a residence hall.  Is this okay?
If I’m going to be an ELI student and I won’t get an ID card before ELI Orientation, how can I eat in the dining hall?
What is ELI’s cost?
When do I pay this?
I have permission to take one UB class (Level 5) or two UB classes (Level 6) at the same time as completing ELI.  What will it cost?

My acceptance letter says that I have been conditionally accepted.  Can I take classes in my program?
Not until you take the ELAB and receive a written permission form to register for classes.

My I-20 says that English is required for my program of study and English instruction will be given at the school.  Can I take classes in my program?
Not until you take the ELAB and receive a written permission form to register for classes.

What do I do after I pass the ELAB?
See your advisor to choose the classes to register for.  Your advisor’s name is on your acceptance letter or see Admissions.

What happens if I don’t pass the ELAB?
You need to report to the English Language Institute(ELI).  You will be placed in one of the levels (1 through 6) in ELI.  This is a full time program and you will need to complete Level 6 before you can take University of Bridgeport(UB) classes.

I didn’t pass the ELAB.  Can I take classes in my program this semester and do ELI next semester or in the summer?
No.  UB policy is that you must meet the English Language Requirement(ELR) before you can register for UB classes.  Only by taking ELI full time and continuously until you graduate can you maintain your student status.

Is it ever possible to take ELI and get started on my UB classes?
Yes.  Students who are in ELI Level 5 at the start of the fall or spring semester can register for one UB class that meets outside of the ELI class hours, and students who are in Level 6 at the start of the fall or spring semester can register for two UB classes.  To take this option you should be prepared to work extremely hard.  ELI classes meet for 25 hours a week and are your first responsibility.

I got permission to take one or two UB classes plus ELI, but I know that I need to be a full time student in order to keep my F1 student status.  I’m afraid I’ll be out of status!
Don’t worry.  Because ELI is a full time language program, as long as you are enrolled at ELI, you keep your full time status.

I know I want to go to ELI before taking any UB classes to improve my English, when should I arrive?
You should arrive for the Wednesday ELI start date.  For the fall and spring semesters, this is about one week later than UB’s orientation.  For students who have reserved a room in the residence halls, you should check in on Monday or Tuesday. Come to ELI on the Wednesday start date and ELI will help you with all check-in procedures.

I know I want to go to ELI before taking any UB classes, but I reserved a flight for an earlier date and I want to live in a residence hall.  Is this okay?
Yes.  Your residence hall reservation starts the Tuesday night before ELI’s start date, so you will be charged a daily rate for the days you are in the residence hall before that Tuesday night and your meal plan doesn’t start until Tuesday dinner.

If I’m going to be an ELI student and I won’t get an ID card before ELI Orientation, how can I eat in the dining hall?
ELI sends a list of students who have reserved a room on campus to the dining service.  They will check your name against this list and let you eat until you get your ID card.

What is ELI’s cost?
As an ELI student, you will be paying each session (two months).  Tuition and required fees is $2580.  Room and meals on campus is $2560.

When do I pay this?
Payment is due by the first day of ELI Orientation.

I have permission to take one UB class (Level 5) or two UB classes (Level 6) at the same time as completing ELI.  What will it cost?
Because the UB class goes for the whole semester and ELI sessions are only half a semester, you will be charged like a regular UB student for health insurance, housing fees if you are in a residence hall, and registration fees.  Then you will be charged for the ELI program tuition and the tuition for your UB class(es).

What can I do to get extra money if FA does not cover?
Your family doesn’t have to bear the whole cost of a college education yourselves. Paying for college is a partnership, and this partnership includes your family, the government, and the school your child selects.   At the heart of this partnership is your family, which includes you, your child, and any other relatives who are willing to help out, such as grandparents. An option to help parents participate in this partnership is the Parent PLUS Loans.  The primary benefit of the PLUS Loans is that parents can borrow federally guaranteed low interest loans to help pay for their child's education.  A Federal PLUS Loan allows parents to borrow the total cost of undergraduate education including tuition, room and board, supplies, lab expenses, travel less any other aid.  These parent loans are non-need based. Eligibility for the PLUS Loan depends on a modest credit check that determines whether the parent as an adverse credit.  Unlike other type of loans, including home equity, parent PLUS Loans require no collateral.  Interest may be tax deductible.
The University of Bridgeport understands that families look for as many options as possible to make financing an education more convenient and affordable. Tuition Management Systems offers a wide array of valuable options. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact: Tuition Management Systems at 1-800-722-4867 or www.afford.com/bridgeport.

When can I apply for a Parent Plus loan?
Federal Parent PLUS Loans enable parents with good credit histories to borrow money to pay the education expenses of their children. Each child must be a dependent undergraduate student enrolled at least half time in an approved college or university.   You should start applying for the Parent plus loan 8 weeks before classes start at www.bridgeport.edu/finaid.

How can I get more scholarship/grant money?
Financial-aid administrators sometimes must use professional judgment to address unusual circumstances that affect students’ or parents’ ability to pay educational expenses. By exercising professional judgment, aid administrators can potentially adjust students’ federal financial-aid awards. You must have already filed the 2008-2009 FAFSA and received an agreement letter listing your financial aid awards.  Students and/or parents who wish to have their 2007 Adjusted Gross Income reviewed must complete this form and provide all required documentation. The Office of Student Financial Aid will review each student’s circumstance on a case-by-case basis, and does not guarantee that students who submit this request will be given an adjustment. Professional judgments do not carry over from year to year. Circumstances that do not qualify for a professional judgment according to the U.S. Department of Education regulation HEA Sec. 479A(a) and the University of Bridgeport include: 1. Standard living expenses (e.g. Home mortgage, credit card bills, car payments and other consumer items) 2.Tithing expenses 3.Vacation expenses.  4. Tuition paid for private elementary or secondary schools.  5. Bankruptcy and 6.Professional licensing exam fees.

Another process use is the Appeal process, in which the student writes a detail letter explaining why they want to come to University of Bridgeport, what they would hope to accomplish at the university, and why they need additional funding.

Suppose I do not want work study.  Do I still get the funds?
No, Federal Work-Study (FWS) provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the recipient's course of study.  If a student does not participate in FWS this would be mean that the parents would compensate that difference via parent Plus loan, or payment plan.

What is verification and why did I get chosen?
Verification is a process to confirm information you provided on the FAFSA.  These are the main reasons for being selected:  You were chosen randomly by the US Dept Ed.  The FAFSA you submitted was incomplete, your FAFSA contains estimated information or the data you provided on the FAFSA is inconsistent.
If you are selected for FAFSA verification, you must provide specific documentation. Not all students selected for verification have to submit the same documents. Save the records and materials that you used to complete the FAFSA.  Verification ensures that the information students and parents report is accurate. Verification prevents ineligible students from receiving aid by reporting false information and ensures that eligible students receive all of the aid for which they are qualified. The sooner you verify your information, the sooner you’ll be able to receive financial aid if you’re eligible.

Why does my son have to register for selective service?
Almost all male U.S. citizens, and male aliens living in the U.S., who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service. It's important to know that even though he is registered, a man will not automatically be inducted into the military.  Because selective service registration is required by the Federal government, you can not receive Federal Student Aid unless your son registers.

When does the FAFSA need to be submitted for the new school year?
To receive your maximum eligibility you should complete your FASFA by March 1st of every year you plan to attend.  However you may still submit your application after the deadline but we can not guarantee your maximum eligibility.

First Year Studies Program (FYSP)

Does being in FYSP mean I have to be in college for an extra year?
How do I find out who my advisor is?
How often do I need to meet with my advisor?

Does being in FYSP mean I have to be in college for an extra year?
Not necessarily.  Most of the courses you take will count either toward general education requirements, free electives, or your prospective major.  You may also take additional credits in any semester.

How do I find out who my advisor is?
The director of FYSP will be able to direct you to your advisor.

How often do I need to meet with my advisor?
It is to your advantage to meet with your advisor several times during the semester.  Your advisor can help you with more than class registration.  Get to know your advisor, but more importantly, let your advisor get to know you.  Make appointments to meet with your advisor to review academic problems and academic success and to discuss a plan of action for applying for a major.

You MUST include your first and last name, your UB student ID number and your academic major when making a request to defer your admission. If you were previously granted admission, were issued an I-20 form and were unable to attend UB, you MUST submit the following:
o Your ORIGINAL I-20 form that was issued to you by the University of Bridgeport.
o A CLEAR typed letter stating that you would like us to defer your admission to a specific semester and issue you a new I-20. You MUST include your complete name, e-mail address and the mailing address you want the new I-20 to be sent to. If you want the new I-20 to be sent to the same address you have already provided us with, you still need to mention that address in your letter.
o A new signed and dated Financial Statement for International Students (FSIS), you can download the FSIS from by going to http://www.bridgeport.edu/admissions/temp/statement.pdf

You must make sure that the bank statement you originally submitted is current and no more than 6 months old. If it is more than 6 months old, you will be asked to send us a new bank statement. Once you have met these requirements we will defer your admission to the next available semester and issue you a new acceptance letter and I-20 form. Your admission will NOT be deferred until we receive all of the above documents. The application deadlines also apply to students who want to defer their admission. The Office of International Admission reserves the right to ask for additional academic/financial information when students defer their admission. Students who request to defer their admission more than two times may be asked to pay a processing fee of $35.

If you are an F-1 student authorized to work in curricular practical training (CPT), we will provide you with your Form I-20 with the employment page (page 3) completed and signed by a school’s designated official to apply for the Social Security number.

Do I get a Social Security number as soon as I enroll at UB?
Social Security numbers are used to report your wages to the government and to determine eligibility for Social Security benefits.  As an F-1 or J-1 student, you will not be automatically assigned a Social Security Number just to enroll in a college or school.  Social Security numbers are generally assigned to people who are authorized to work in the United States.

How can I get a Social Security number as a new student?
You must have an on-campus job to be eligible for a Social Security Number.

How can I open a bank account or cell phone if I don't have a Social Security number?
There is no federal law which mandates a Social Security Number before a bank account or cell phone can be opened to an International Student.  During Orientation, we’ll invite various banks and cell phone companies to come to campus to help international students open bank accounts and get cell phones.

How early can I enter the United States?  What is going to happen if I arrive too early?
As per immigration law, you are allowed to enter the United States no earlier than 30 days prior to the start date as shown on your I-20.  You will be returned back to your home country by the immigration officer at the port of entry if you arrive earlier than 30 days prior to your start date.

Should my I-20 be stamped at the port of entry?
Yes, your I-20 needs to be stamped by the immigration officer at the port of entry.  The stamp should show the following information: the date when you enter the U.S., F-1 and D/S (duration of status).  Please make sure not to pack your I-20 in your suitcase as your original I-20, not a copy, should be stamped.

What is an I-94 card?
Form I-94 Arrival and Departure Records, a white card, is a very important document.  It verifies you have been legally admitted to the United States and that your immigration status is F-1.    It is normally given to you on the airplane for you to fill out.  It has two portions: arrival and departure portions. After completing the form, the arrival portion will be handed in to the officer at the port of entry. The departure portion will be stamped: date of entry, F-1 and D/S and returned to you.  Please do make sure the information of date of entry, F-1 and D/S is clearly showed on your I-94 card.  If you lose your I-94 card, the replacement can be very costly and time consuming.  Without an I-94 card, you will not be able to apply for a driver’s license, Social Security Number even if you have an on-campus job or other immigration benefits.  The information on your I-94 card (family name, first name, date of birth and country of citizenship) must match your passport.

How much money do I need to have available when I arrive to UB?
For a complete list of the costs you should expect to pay, please click here. New students should be prepared to pay half the total yearly costs each semester. Graduate students with prerequisite courses should expect an additional cost of $6,500 or more depending on the student's major. Our Bursar will determine the exact dollar amounts after the student arrives to campus, and once the student and their academic advisor selects the required courses. Both graduate and undergraduate students need to pay ALL of their first semester costs (tuition fees, room/board and health insurance) when they arrive on campus and before they register for classes. Fees can be paid by U.S. cash, bank check, credit card, money draft, money order, or by wiring money to the University bank account.
