Making an appointment

Making an appointment is very simple. You can either: 1) Call (203) 576-4454 and ask to set up an appointment. 2) E-mail counselingservices@bridgeport.edu to request an appointment. 3) Come to room 119 (alone or with someone you trust) of the Health Sciences Building (Warner Hall) and set up an appointment in person. 4) Speak with your R.A., R.D., or another UB staff or faculty member and ask for assistance in making an appointment.

Counseling Services provides short term personal counseling free of charge to all students. Counseling sessions are typically 45-50 minutes in duration. There is a 12 session limit per student for the academic year. Most students have their needs met in 1 to 4 sessions. It is important to attend all scheduled counseling sessions and to arrive on time. Please contact CS if you know you will be late or unable to attend an appointment. If you are more than 10 minutes late for a session, you may need to reschedule. 

What to expect in the first appointment

When attending counseling for the first time, you may be asked to come in early to fill out paperwork (Or, click here to print and complete the forms in advance). This will provide contact information, help identify issues of concern, and provide you with information on privacy. 

During the initial session, you will have a chance to describe why you are seeking counseling.  Counselors will typically ask how long you have been troubled by the presenting problem, what you have tried to do to solve it, if you have faced these problems in the past, etc. You will not be pressured to discuss topics that you are unwilling to talk about. At the end of the session, the counselor will help you plan a course of action which may include: 1. Deciding on a counselor. 2. Developing strategies and/or an action plan to address the problem(s). 3. Referring you to another counselor outside of UB if needed.
